In the dialog that opens, navigate to the drive/folder where you want to save the new project. Just tell iMovie to create a new project. There's no need to create two projects (one on the local drive and one on the external drive.) If you find this helpful or if your problem is solved, please indicate this by selecting the appropriate icon in the header of this response. Now that iMovie '06 allows you to open multiple files at once and copy/cut/paste between them, what you require is possible and much easier to accomodate. Delete the copy on the internal drive, and open it from the external drive. You can also simply import the video to your local machine, up to a certain point, and then save the project, and copy it out to the external drive. Indeed, if you edit from the external drive, you may find that the responsiveness of the video editing is a bit lacking. Saving out over a firewire port to an external drive is invariably slower than saving on the built-in drive. This can cause some problems with a slower drive or slower machine. NOW when you do an import, the video will be saved on the external drive. From the file dialog that comes up, select the external drive as the save location. NOW from within iMovie, create a new project. The drive will appear as an icon on your desktop. Firewire is probably the way to go if you have that option. I have a documentary I am working on that is some three hours long, and has about ten hours of raw footage.įirst, plug your Lacie drive into the appropriate port.
